ROW Festival 2010

Martin Cronin has been kind enough to let me hold the 2010 Fishing festival at Peterstone...on the day ticket lakes.

The 2 day event went very well and Dave Gawthorn came down and chatted with everybody who took part in the event, so a big thank you to him.

The event was held on Swan lake and the weights were as follows...

Theo has been an angler since he was a kid over 45 years ago.

In that time his enthusiasm and passion for all things fishing has seen him grow in stature and indeed confidence in his ability to put a few things on the bank.

For many years he just bobbed along enjoying the moment until a spark ignited deep inside that told him to put down the beer and think about catching fish.

He is quite a solitary angler who spends a lot of time fishing alone or with just a close freinds,however if you talk to him about our wonderful past time you will be surprised by his warmth and openness.

His days on the bank has always been a balancing act between work commitments,family and singing in a band and on a personal level fishing has been leveller and provided solace when life has been unjust and unkind.

The book is Theos journey through his fishing life and makes its way from humble beginings to Framptom Court and many of our countries rivers,lakes and ponds even The Birch.

Packed full of stunning photos and anglers such as dave Gawthorn and Gary Wade.

Every book comes with its own signed certificate.

In total over 1100 lb of carp were caught, consisting of over 100 fish (iirc)

So the Welsh carp Forum win the 1st leg - roll on August Bank Holiday Weekend.

Well done to all who fished - good angling boys.
especially the Welsh lads who overcame a generally sh*t draw and what was at one point a 150 lb odd deficit.

Thanks to all the marshals - especially Chris who was head marshal, and who like myself stayed there for the whole 48 hrs (minus a few life saving trips home) but being in charge he had a harder time of it than most.

right its all over.

at around 11-30 last night The Sheriff asked if i knew the scores, so i walked round and got them all.

when i got back to his swim though, this is the site that greeted me.

anyways i couldnt tell Martin as he was dead to the world, but it was Carpology on about 460 lb and the Welsh Carp Forum on 340 lb - however by the time id got back to my own bivvy Mark Bartlett had 2 more fish for 15 lb in the net ready to be weighed.
so with 12 hrs left to run we were 105 lb behind

after a busy night it was a lot closer.
dale, sheriff, nigel and mark all had fish (mark alone had about 8 fish in the last 12 hrs)  and only andy c for the carpology boys had caught during the night.

it was very close.
over the next few hrs both howie and mark bartlett caught fish.
this one was going down to the wire.

a few of the Welsh boys were wishing they had listened to Jimmy when he was showing them how to tie the dustcap rig as that could have made all the difference.

anyways a few hrs later back at the Birch, Chris announced the scores.

Day Ticket Lakes

Peterstone Coarse Lakes, Wentloog, Newport, Wales.
OS Map 171 (1:50,000). Ref - 288 809.

Directions From Castleton on the A48 between Newport and Cardiff, take the road south through Marshfield to the first T-junction and turn left then right into Walnut Tree farm. Go through the farmyard and follow the signs down to the Lodge.

The two general coarse lakes at Peterstone fishery provide first-class angling for many species. All are heavily stocked and often provide very large mixed bags of carp, barbel, ide, orfe, rudd and bream. The biggest lake of three acres, made by joining the original Willows and Swan Lakes, holds the biggest carp with several varieties of up to well over 20lb and the nearby 1-acre Pencil Lake, stocked with the novice in mind, is an ideal water for a first-time new angler to achieve competence. It holds the same mix of species as the main water with some nice big carp and bream and is a favourite for holding matches due to its regular bumper weigh-ins.

Both lakes have flat, open banks making it easy to handle a pole with plenty of spare room behind and are up to approximately 8ft deep with minimal surface weed, though the larger one has a bit more than the others in two corners to keep the carp happy on hot days.

The surrounding area has plenty to keep the family busy while you're fishing, with the bustling cities of Cardiff and Newport not far away.

A well-stocked tackle and bait shop is on site just yards from the lakes in a comfortable lodge that offers all-day breakfasts and other refreshments. Here you can also get information about two other excellent coarse lakes in the eastern suburbs of Cardiff that are run by the same fishery management.

The Pencil Lake

This lake is the anglers favourite. Stocked with some tough fighting fish.
It is also known to produce bags of over 100lbs on one of the most coldest days of the year in December 2006, by Giles Cochrane.
Also voted 7th place by Angling times for the HOTTEST F1 spot!
Even in the most notorious weather, it produces large bags of fish.
You really can't go wrong with this one.
This lake is full of many surprises.
All the pegs are even throughout enabling anglers an easy and comfortable access to and fro their pegs.

The Swan Lake/Carp Lake

These two lakes have been cut in one.

There are some larger lumps in these lakes and can produce well. Also holding many surprises within it's water.
Another anglers favourite due to the fantastic sized perch around 2 1/2 pounds +, there are reports of larger.
Besides perch, there's bream in the doubles which used to thrive within the Birch syndicate until their transfer across.
There's some real monsters in this one! Lets not forget the Barbel, roach, Rudd, Tench, Orfe, Carp. The carp run into double figures top teens lower twenties.
